The foundation of youth sports would collapse without dedicated coaches who put fun and development above competition and who place the emotional and physical well-being of players ahead of a personal desire to win. These inspiring role models are caring friends, enthusiastic team leaders and a beacon of fair play and sportsmanship.
It is with this realization that the National Alliance For Youth Sports created the NYSCA Youth Sports Coach of the Year Award. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2010 NYSCA Coach of the Year.
Do you know a volunteer coach who places the emotional and physical well being of players ahead of any personal desires to win? Does he or she treat each player as an individual? Are they an enthusiastic team leader, a positive role model, and do they have thorough knowledge of the techniques and rules for the sport while being an understanding and caring friend? Are you proud to have them coaching in your community? If you answered yes to the above questions, then they deserve to be nominated for the prestigious National Youth Sports Coaches Association Coach of the Year award. The award was presented at the International Youth Sports Congress in Orlando, FL, on December 2, 2009. The winner receives travel, lodging and registration expenses to the Congress, as well as several other prizes. So, tell us about your coach and how he or she makes practices fun and challenging while promoting fair play and sportsmanship. Nominate a coach you believe provides a healthy environment for kids.
Judging will be based on the following: The nominee...
- Must be a member of the NYSCA
- Places the emotional and physical well being of players ahead of a personal desire to win
- Treats each player as an individual and understands the range of emotional and physical development for the same age group
- Does his/her best to provide a safe playing situation for all players
- Reviews and practices basic first aid principles needed to treat injuries
- Leads by example in demonstrating fair play and sportsmanship
- Provides a sports environment free of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol, and refrains from their use at all youth sports events
- Is knowledgeable of the rules for each sport that he or she coaches, and teaches these rules
- Uses the coaching techniques appropriate for all of the skills taught
- Remembers that he or she is a youth sports coach, and that the game is for kids, not adults
