Background Screening in Youth Sports

Volunteer screening and conducting thorough background checks are complex topics that every youth sports organization must address. In response to the need for knowledge, we present a variety of resources designed to help organizations take a proactive approach to this subject. The National Alliance for Youth Sports has gathered information from the field to provide up-to-date information to assist youth sports organizations as they tackle this important topic!

In response to the changing landscape of volunteer screening, NAYS recently updated the white paper on background screening that was originally released in 2006.

Since background checks are one part of the overall youth sports volunteer screening process, the updated information provides detailed information about the screening process and provides general guidelines as well as disqualifiers as they pertain to youth sports volunteer background checks.

Please be advised these are guidelines and not standards. Each organization must develop their own standards for performing background checks.

NAYS Screening Partnership

Since 2008 NAYS has had a collaborative initiative with Active Screening, one of the industry's leading innovators of background screening solutions. In 2010, Active Screening created a new division called Protect Youth Sports® to focus exclusively on screening youth sports coaches. This partnership was created to provide NAYS members and other youth sports organizations with an essential service.

Since a uniform system does not exist, background checks should be conducted to meet your organizations screening policies. Protect Youth Sports® has developed minimum recommendations depending upon your state to assist your organization in creating your policy. Sign up is completely free for NAYS Chapters.

Not all Background Screening Companies are alike. Protect Youth Sports® offers:

  • True 50 state Sex Offender Search.
  • Re-verification of any records found on the National Database at no additional cost.
  • Social Security Number and Address History Verification.
  • Be aware that not all states report evenly to the National Database. An online consultant is available to assist you in determining the minimum package required for your state.
  • If you are not a NAYS Chapter please click here and learn more about background checks.
