Pedaling for a purpose

7/10/2012

Matt Stoltz is definitely not your typical college student.

While most 19-year-olds devote their summers to partying, hanging with friends and working to earn some spending money, Stoltz is spending a big chunk of his summer perched atop a bike – all in an effort to help others.

That's right, the soon-to-be sophomore at the University of Wisconsin is pedaling 1,700 miles – from Wisconsin all the way to our headquarters in West Palm Beach – all because he wants to raise money and awareness for our ONE WORLD. ONE TEAM. initiative. In short, through OWOT we ship new and gently used sports equipment to underprivileged children in need, both here in the U.S. and around the world.

Matt has been one of the program’s biggest supporters ever since he started doing fund-raisers and sports equipment drives as a high school student. He knows how valuable sports have been in shaping his life and he's doing whatever he can to make sure other kids reap those same benefits.

Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Stoltz did one hell of a job raising their son.

So now, as Matt is more than a week into his 37-day, eight-state journey he is dealing with torturous heat, muscle-searing hills, flat tires, idiot drivers, headwinds, rain – did I mention idiot drivers? – and roads that simply aren't bike friendly.

All because he really wants to make a difference.

Pretty impressive.

You can read more about his trip – an idea he came up with on his own and pursued vigorously – at the top of our website.

If you'd like to make a donation to support his efforts that’s great; and if you just want to learn more about a pretty remarkable student who has taken "giving back" to a whole new level that is fine, too.

It's just pretty cool to see an individual more concerned about others than themselves.
