Officials play vital roles in youth athletic programs around the country and their contributions significantly impact the quality of the experiences young athletes have. Sure, it’s a challenging job, but one that – when handled correctly – is enormously enriching and satisfying.
The best youth sports officials are those who have an understanding of the spirit and intent of the rules and how to enforce them; possess outstanding communication skills to interact with players and coaches in a positive manner; and who display poise, have integrity and use good judgment.
Overview - National Youth Sports Officials Association

NAYS created the National Youth Sports Officials Association (NYSOA) to help both veteran and beginning officials have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities so that they can use their positions of authority to make a positive difference.
The NYSOA provides training, support, and continuing education to officials in out-of-school youth sports programs. The training shares information on characteristics common to all successful sports officials, the importance of being a role model, first aid and safety, and many other important areas.
How It Works
Introduction to Youth Sports Officials Association:
To become a member of the NYSOA, officials must participate in an interactive video, successfully complete an exam and sign the NYSOA Code of Ethics Pledge. The clinic also includes the distribution of a journal providing an important message about youth sports. The membership fee is $20. Click here for more information on the Introduction to Youth Sports Officials Association Initial Level Membership.
Continuing Education:
After completing the Introduction to Youth Sports Officials Association Initial Level Membership, officials will receive a renewal notice for continuing their membership (sent prior to the membership's expiration date). To continue membership, the member resigns the Officials Code of Ethics Pledge and remits the annual $20 membership fee. Click here for more information on Continuing Membership.
