North Dakota State adds CYSA certification training into curriculum

Students at North Dakota State University preparing for careers in the youth sports industry are immersed in an innovative curriculum that features Certified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA) training, too.

As part of the Introduction to Youth and Interscholastic Sport course offered by the university’s Sport Management Program, 21 students are going through the online Academy for Youth Sports Administrators training provided by the National Alliance for Youth Sports and earning the CYSA credential that more than 5,600 recreation professionals worldwide have completed.

“As a current youth sports leader myself, I wish I had this kind of training when I was just getting out of college,” said Tyler Tracy, Lecturer and Program Coordinator for Sport Management at NDSU, and a CYSA. “My experiences and knowledge were trial by fire and learn as you go. When I found out about the CYSA training from NAYS, I instantly saw the value this would have for future young professionals looking to get into the field of working with youth. The CYSA is a great tool to prepare both future and current leaders within the youth sports industry. Here at NDSU, we saw its value and wanted to assure our graduates were coming out prepared to take on the industry of youth sports leadership.”

“We are so pleased to be working with North Dakota State University and helping prepare their students to be knowledgeable and successful leaders, since oftentimes many graduates will work in the field of recreation and athletics,” said Lisa Licata, Senior Director of Professional Administrators for NAYS. “Providing a recognized industry certification and opportunities to network with other CYSAs from around the country will be hugely beneficial as they start their careers.”

Upon successful completion of the training students earn the coveted CYSA designation that can be added to their resume and enhance their opportunities for employment in the youth sports sector, as more recreation departments these days are adding CYSA preferred to job openings.

Plus, students who fulfill the training requirements receive a CYSA certificate, shirt, and have access to additional trainings, tools, resources, and all-important networking opportunities with recreation professionals worldwide.

The Academy for Youth Sports Administrators is one of the most respected trainings available for professional youth sports administrators. Among the topics covered in the training are child abuse and bullying prevention, parent management, conflict resolution, inclusion, insurance and risk management, youth sports philosophy, professional development, volunteer management, and more.
